    Car Owner

    Insurance

  • How does the Insurance work?
  • Carhood provides you with insurance coverage that covers a variety of situations and incidents. We provide $35,000,000 of liability coverage to protect you while the vehicle is being used by a renter. We also provide theft, collision, and damage insurance to cover the entire value of the car. Finally, we also cover mechanical breakdowns that occur as a result of improper usage of a vehicle during a rental (but not breakdowns that occur as a result of normal driving). Please see www.carhood.com.au/insurance for more information.

  • Will my personal auto insurance change?
  • Carhood's coverage replaces your personal auto insurance from the time that your car is collected by a fellow Renter. Carhood coverage remains in place until the car is returned by the Renter back to Carhood. Our insurance policy is primary so no other insurance coverage is required within a trip period. If you do believe that your policy may be in jeapordy, let us know and we will work with your insurer as claims that occur during a trip will not count against your personal insurance policy.

  • What about CTP Insurance? Do I need to change anything?
  • All car Owners must ensure that they have valid and appropriate Compulsory Third-Party (CTP) insurance for their car whilst it is being rented. In particular, if the CTP insurance policy cover is listed as "private" cover, the Renter may not be covered for third-party personal injury. In order to ensure cover a "commercial" or "business" CTP insurance may be required. As the CTP legislation varies in each state we invite you to check with your local authority.

  • What if someone steals my car?
  • We'll arrange a replacement vehicle for your use while we sort out the situation with the police and our insurance company. We provide theft coverage for the full value of your vehicle, and we will endeavour to expedite your claim. If you would like more information, you can email support@carhood.com.au

  • What if my car is involved in an accident?
  • We will notify you of the damage right away. If your car can't be repaired in time for it to be available for your pickup, we'll arrange a car for your use while we get the vehicle repaired and the claim settled with the insurance company. Alternatively, if the vehicle is still safe to drive and only has cosmetic damage, you can have the vehicle repaired yourself. Carhood must approve any quotes or estimates for repair before you get started. Please email support@carhood.com.au if you would like more details.

  • What if the valet driver damages my car?
  • Our valet drivers are very carefully selected and are screened for their driving abilities. Rest assured that we only have the most professional employees. If something does happen, Carhood maintains sufficient liability coverage for our employees to cover any damage.

  • How do I report damage?
  • Please email us at support@carhood.com.au if you notice physical or mechanical damage to your vehicle within three days of picking up your car. We will then guide you through the process of setting up and filing a claim.

  • How do you check or screen renters?
  • We use a variety of checks and screening methods to make sure that only qualified drivers are able to use your vehicle. We also verify renters' identities and may also do a background check. We will determine eligibility through our own criteria. You can see our renter eligibility criteria here

  • Do I need to pay an excess if there is a claim?
  • No not at all. Car owners do not need to pay any excess if there is a claim.

    Listing your Car

  • How do I list my car on Carhood?
  • Listing a car with us is easy. Simply click on Share and follow the prompts. Once you've completed your booking, you will receive an email confirmation that includes further instructions about dropping off your vehicle.

  • What kind of cars can I list?
  • We have several main requirements for all of our vehicles. First, they must be registered in Australia and be in good working condition. Next, they must be a maximum of 14 years old (model year 2003 or newer). Finally, they can have a maximum of 200,000 kilometres and a maximum book value of $100,000. • Can I list a car that is not mine?
  • In order to list a car on Carhood you must be the name listed on the registration papers or have written permission to list the vehicle on Carhood by the person whose name is registered.
You must be able to provide this written permission to Carhood should it be requested.

  • Can I register a company or leased car?
  • Yes, provided you have the written permission of the owner/company. Check with your company or the leasing company if in doubt.
If your company is interested in using the services of Carhood please contact us at support@carhood.com.au

  • How much should I charge for my car?

    Taxes

We stress that every provider of vehicles should have their situation reviewed by a legal & tax advisor to ensure they are following their local laws & regulations. We expect all car owners to comply with the tax regulations in their area.

The activity and average frequency of sharing your car via the Carhood network is viewed as a recreational pursuit of convenience rather than a taxable business activity. This means that we consider an "average" provider under Carhood's facilities would not be required to return the income they derive from hiring out their motor vehicle in their income tax return. This also means that any expenses that would be attributed to deriving the hiring income are also not tax deductible.

  • Do I need to have an ABN number and be registered for GST?
  • We consider that the "average" provider of a vehicle through Carhood will not be conducting a business or undertaking an adventure or concern in the nature of trade. As such, no ABN number or GST registration would be required. Again, this may not be applicable to your specific situation and we encourage you to speak to a tax professional if in doubt.

    Rental Details

  • How many kilometers is the renter allowed to drive my car?
  • Renters are allowed to drive up to 200 kilometers for each day of their rental. One day is considered to be a full 24 hour period. On average, renters drive around 60-100 kilometers per day.

  • How does petrol work?
  • We'll note the amount of petrol you bring the car in with. Renters are expected to return the car with that amount, or more, just as with a standard rental car. If they return it with less, we will either refill your tank to the previous state, or we will pay you enough to return it to its original state.

Please drop off the car with a full tank of petrol.

  • Can I store my luggage & stuff anywhere before the rental?
  • We recommend you remove any items from your car before you drop it off. If you leave any items in the vehicle, we will do our best to store them. Please note that this is a courtesy service and we bear no responsibility for your items.

  • What happens if someone gets a fine or infringement while using my car?
  • Renters are responsible for any fines or infringements incurred during the reservation. If you receive a notification of a fine or infringement, please notify us at support@carhood.com.au immediately. We will organise a statutory declaration or reimburse you for the charge.

  • What if a renter gets into an accident?
  • They are informed straight away.

In line with our rental agreements, renters must report any damages that occur during the rental period. We collect all information and file a claim with our insurance company as necessary. We will inform you of the situation as soon we are aware of what has happened. While your car is being repaired, we provide a replacement vehicle for your use. Alternatively, we can reimburse you up to $30 per day for a maximum of 14 days for your transportation needs. If you select this option then it is your responsibility to provide Carhood with the receipts and records of expenses, so that Carhood can liaise with the insurance company to cover your costs.

  • How do you deal with tolls?
  • At our locations, we will remove your transponder (e.g. e-tag) and install our own devices. This ensures that on automatic toll roads, you will not receive any unpaid toll notices. Once the vehicle is returned to us we will put back your transponder.

  • What if my car is impounded during a rental?
  • Carhood will reimburse you, the owner, of any fees directly relating to the impound, including towing and storage, up to a maximum of the amount of days between when the vehicle was impounded and two days after your scheduled return and vehicle pickup. You will be responsible for having the vehicle released from impound.

  • What if a renter makes a mess inside my car?
  • Carhood washes and vacuums your vehicle at the end of each rental, and before you come pick it up. We will ensure that it is as clean as when you left it with us. If the car requires deep cleaning (for example if someone smokes inside a non-smoking vehicle), we will endeavor to have it cleaned and waiting for you upon your return. If this is not possible, we will provide you with a loaner car while the cleaning is completed or reimburse you for the cleaning cost.

    Travel Changes

  • What if my flight is cancelled after I get to the airport, and I no longer want to travel, or need to drive to another airport?
  • Just call us and we'll return your vehicle. You can take your own car back as long as it has been less than 4 hours since you dropped it off.

  • What if I'm late in arriving at the airport?
  • If you're less than 3 hours late, don't worry about it. If a serious delay is affecting your anticipated vehicle drop-off time, please call us to let us know.

  • What if I return from my trip early?
  • If it's only an hour or two early, we'll probably already have your car ready and waiting for you. However, if you have a more significant schedule change and your vehicle is our on hire, you may need to arrange an alternate vehicle until your car is returned. We can rent you one of ours in most cases. Please inform us of schedule changes immediately.

  • What if I return from my trip late?
  • No problem. Please let us know as soon as possible. There is no extra parking charge, either.

  • What if a renter returns my car late?
  • All rentals must be concluded 2 hours before your anticipated arrival to ensure that your vehicle is available and waiting for you upon your return to our facility. If, for some reason, your vehicle has not been returned when you arrive, we will arrange an alternate vehicle for you to take home immediately and then we will work with you to return your own vehicle once it is returned.

  • How much is the excess?
  • If the Vehicle is damaged or stolen or third party loss occurs during the rental or results from the Renter's use of the Vehicle, subject to these Terms and Requirements, the Renter's liability for each claim is limited to the standard Accidental Damage Excess (ADE) outlined in the rental agreement. The Renter must pay the ADE which will be charged by Carhood immediately upon notification of an accident. This ADE is refundable to the Renter if it transpires that the Renter was not at fault and if there is no third party loss. If the cost of the repairs is less than the ADE the Renter will be reimbursed the difference.

  • Can I reduce my excess?
  • Renters may reduce the standard Accidental Damage Excess (ADE) by purchasing at additional cost the following buy down options:

Extensions need to be verified with the owners availability and other bookings already made against that vehicle. If an extension is not available, the vehicle must be returned at the original return time.
Rentals are refundable excluding one day's rental charge. Changes to a rental length or time period can be made any time until the scheduled pick up time with no fee except any price difference as calculated by current prices at the time of the change (no refund will be issued for difference in price if the rental is changed with 24 hours of rental start).

  • I found some damage on the car while I was picking it up. Am I responsible for that?
  • No. Our team members take detailed photos of every car that arrives into our system and inspect it for any damage. That way, any pre-existing conditions are documented and we give you a report when you pick up your vehicle. However, if you find something in particular, please feel free to check with us to make sure we have it noted. If you notice any mechanical issues with the car while driving, please call us to have it documented or to arrange to have your vehicle swapped.

  • Can I drive or take the vehicle out of the country?
  • Carhood's insurance coverage applies only to rentals that take place solely within Australia. For that reason vehicles may never be transported to any other destination outside of Australia. Vehicles must not be transported by truck, train, aircraft, or vessel for any reason, except by short-distance ferry.

  • Do you provide car seats?
  • Yes, we provide car seats in limited quantities and sizes. Even if you reserve them ahead of time, they are provided on a first come, first served basis. Please note that for liability reasons our staff cannot assist you in installing the car seat.
Car seats can be hired at a low rate of $7/day

  • Do you provide GPS Units?
  • Some of our vehicles have built in GPS systems. For those that don't, we can provide a GPS unit for $8.00 per day. They are provided on a first come, first served basis. Please note that for liability reasons our staff cannot assist you in installing the GPS unit.

  • Do you have any cars I can smoke in?
  • No smoking is allowed in or directly around any Vehicles available for use through Carhood. You will be charged a Cleaning Fee of up to $1,000 if you or any other individual violates this policy with your rented vehicle.

  • I have an allergy to cats/dogs. How can I ensure that I won't get a car filled with pet hair?
  • Each car is washed and vacuumed before and after each rental. However, if you are concerned about any remaining pet hair, please call us ahead of time at 1300 466 663 and we'll make sure we have an appropriate car waiting for you on pickup.

  • What should I do if I have to pay a toll?
  • Renter is solely responsible for paying all tolls, and fines resulting from improperly paid tolls, incurred during the Rental. Carhood will install its own toll-paying device in the Vehicle for the duration of the rental, in which case you agree to reimburse Carhood for the full amount of the charges on the device during your rental. In the event where Carhood does not install a toll-paying device in the Vehicle, you will be held responsible for any toll invoices or tickets incurred during your rental, any penalties associated with them, and a $50 administrative. In locations where the tolls are not automatically paid via the toll transponder you are required to pay the toll manually. All tolls are charged after you return the car and will include an administration fee of $1.10 per toll (GST Inclusive).
